Name – Surname: Abdulkadir TEPELER

Born: 1978

Born in 1978, Dr. Abdulkadir Tepeler graduated from Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine in 2002 and took his first step into the sacred profession in 2002 at the historical Istanbul University Istanbul Medical Faculty (Çapa) Department of Pediatric Surgery. After gaining experience in Pediatric surgery between 2002-2004, he re-entered the specialty exam and started his urology specialization.

“During the 2 years I worked as a pediatric surgery assistant, I learned the basic principles of surgery and the details of patient follow-up from my esteemed professors at that time. While working in this department, which requires meticulous patient care and includes all surgical disciplines in children, I became interested in the field of Pediatric Urology. Although there was not an official minor branch at that time yet. However, I gained experience by performing complicated cases in the field of Pediatric Urology.”

He received his Urology specialization training at Haseki Training and Research Hospital between 2004-2009. He was closely interested in pediatric urology and endourology and made many academic studies.

“In order to continue my specialization in the field of Urology, I took the specialty exam again in 2004 and was entitled to specialize in Urology. At that time, I received specialization training in the Urology Clinic of Haseki Training and Research Hospital, where endourological methods (laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery: percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), ureterorenoscopy (URS), Laparoscopic oncological surgery) were widely performed). During this period (2004-2009), I attended all congresses organized by the European Urology Association to present oral presentations. I have closely followed scientific activities in the fields of minimally invasive methods (Endoscopic stone treatment and laparoscopic surgery) and Pediatric Urology, and have worked in many national and international scientific journals. In 2009, I successfully completed my residency training with the thesis titled ‘Laparoscopic surgery in stone disease’.

For the compulsory state service duty, Dr. in Silvan district of Diyarbakır for 1 year. After being in Yusuf Azizoğlu State Hospital, he started to work as an Assistant Professor in the newly established Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Urology in October 2010.

“My dream was to become an academic doing research. I would constantly read newly published articles and develop projects with the inspiration I got from them. During the time I was in Diyarbakır, I did not stay idle and worked on it. I collaborated with Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Urology and Pediatric Urology. I spent 1 month of annual leave by working with a very valuable teacher like Prof. Dr. Abdurrahman Önen, Head of Pediatric Urology Department at that time.”

After working as an Assistant Professor between October 2010 and September 2013, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Wisconsin (USA) for 1 year. When he returned to the country in October 2014, he passed the Associate Professor exam and became an Associate Professor. He continued in this position until 2016. He established the first stone disease polyclinic in Turkey at Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital, and was especially interested in the treatment of complicated stone patients (such as kidneys with anomalies, childhood patients, staghorn stones, stone diseases in patients with spastic problems).

“I have made important contributions to the international literature on these issues by applying the popular operation techniques such as micropercutaneous nephrolithotomy (microperc) and ultramini percutaneous nephrolithotomy when I served in Bezmialem. I had the chance to conduct and publish scientific research with Prof. Dr. Steven Nakada, who was the president of the World Endourology Association at that time, at the University of Wisconsin (USA), Kidney and Stone Center, one of the few centers in the United States where I worked for 1 year.

Bezmialem Vakıf University was given a plaque of appreciation by the administrators for his academic work, and he served as the Assistant Coordinator in the Project Support Office, which was established to increase the scientific studies of academicians.

He represented our country in Europe primarily by being elected to the European Urology Association (EAU) Young Academic Urologists Urolithiasis working group between 2011 and 2014, and to the European Urology Association Stone Diseases Guide committee between 2014-2018 due to his academic achievements. He was the author of the stone diseases section of the European guidelines that guide the professional practices of urologists all over the world.
He took part as a speaker at many congresses, courses and panels at home and abroad, and served as a referee in prestigious national and international journals. He has over 100 articles in international SCI/SCI-E journals and over 40 articles in national scientific journals, and these articles have been cited over 3000 times. The Google scholar h index is 30, and it is listed among the 500 most cited academics in Turkey.
